Tuition & Fees

**The information below does not pertain to participants in the Summer College for High School Students or in the Summer Academy program. See Program Costs for Summer College and Program Costs for Summer Academy.

Tuition for 2017

1. Tuition for undergraduates and visiting students. 
  • $3,291 for regular or non-science lab course;
  • $4,388 for a science course with a lab* (Biology 201L,  Chemistry 101DL, Chemistry 201DL, Chemistry 202DL, COMPSCI 230, Physics 141L, and  Physics 142L; also some Engineering courses with labs);
  • $2,194 for each half-course;
  • $1,097 for each quarter-course;

*Charges for laboratory courses may not be split up to pay for the classroom portion separately from the lab portion, and vice versa.

2. Tuition for students enrolled through The Graduate School in doctoral and masters programs.

Students will find detailed information regarding graduate tuition on The Graduate School web site and are encouraged to direct specific questions regarding summer tuition and fees to their graduate program offices or The Graduate School.  Graduate students enrolling in a Summer Session course that is unrelated to their major and that will not count as credit toward their degree will be financially responsible for the tuition charge. Tuition for courses that are unrelated to the major and that do not count as credit toward the degree will be charged at the undergraduate rates noted above in section 1.The fee to audit a course is $302.

Individuals who need or wish to take undergraduate level coursework as prerequisite to graduate coursework should consult their Director of Graduate Studies or program office regarding the possibility of funding for such coursework.

3. Tuition for Duke alumni  and children of Duke employees. 

Duke alumni and children of Duke employees may take summer coursework on Durham's campus at reduced tuition rates: $1,645.50 for each regular or non-science lab Arts and Sciences’ course or $2,742.50 for a science course with a lab (Engineering courses and COMPSCI 230 not included).  See the form.  This grant does not include Global Education programs, courses at the Marine Lab, or courses originating in the Pratt School of Engineering.

4. Tuition for Duke employees. 
  • $975 per course taken for academic credit and $100 per course audited. 

The numbers above reflect the amount that is the responsibility of the Duke employee after the employee tuition grant is applied to the student’s account.  See Special Tuition Rates for Duke Employees for more details.

5. Tuition Grant for Visiting Students enrolled in 2 courses in the same term. 

A visiting student who enrolls in two courses (not PE, music lessons, studio art, or ADF) in the same 6-week summer term may receive a tuition grant equal to one-half of the tuition of the lower priced course. The Summer Session Office will work with the Bursar's Office to have the tuition grant posted to the student's account.

Fees for 2017

Student Health Fee.
  • Duke undergraduate degree candidates registered for on-campus courses are required to pay a $136.00 student health fee per enrolled summer term.
  • Duke graduate students registered for Graduate Continuation only are required to pay a $272.00 student health fee for the entire summer.
Student Services Fee.
  • Duke undergraduate degree candidates registered for on-campus courses are required to pay a $77.00 student services fee per enrolled summer term.
Applied Music Fees.
  • $344 for 1/2 hr. private lessons;
  • $688 for 1 hr. private lessons;
  • $172 for group instruction classes. (Music fees are in addition to regular tuition charges.)
Auditing Fees & Conditions. 
  • For Arts and Sciences offerings, the auditing cost is $302 per academic course.
  • Students carrying less than a full course program may be granted permission by the instructor and the director of the Summer Session to audit one non-laboratory course with the following exceptions: physical education activity courses, studio art classes, applied music courses, domestic or international Global Education courses, independent study courses, practicums and tutorials.
  • Individuals may audit only on a space available basis and after all students seeking academic credit have been enrolled.  Students must submit to the Summer Session office written permission of the instructor for the student to audit the class.  Regular deadlines apply.
  • Courses may not be changed from credit to audit (or vice versa) after the drop/add period.
  • Visiting students enrolled at another university or planning to enroll at another university may NOT audit a course they have not yet taken for credit.
  • Duke students should note that a Duke course taken on an audit basis may never be taken later for credit.
