Summer Session 2021 FAQ - International Visiting Students

Who is allowed to enroll in Summer Session for-credit courses?

Summer Session courses are open to currently enrolled Duke undergraduate students, DKU undergraduate students, and undergraduate students at other universities (i.e., not seeking their degree at Duke). Pre-college students (to Duke or other institutions) are not eligible to enroll in Summer Session courses.

Can international students enroll in Duke Summer Session?

Term 1 - International students can attend Summer Session online. We will not be processing visa requests for Term 1.  Student may take one or two courses.

Term 2 – International students can attend Summer Session online. We will also accept applications from students who wish to attend Duke in person. While we would like to welcome you to the Duke campus, we are not encouraging this option. Based on feedback from the Duke Visa Services Office and remaining uncertainty around international travel, it seems unlikely that there will be sufficient time to process a visa for Summer Session Term 2. If you wish to come to Duke in-person we will work with you on the process for obtaining an I-20 and F-1 visa. You must take 2 courses and one of those two courses must be in-person. Please contact with questions. Note: U.S. law does not permit you to attend Duke Summer Session using a tourist visa (B-1/B-2)

Can international students already studying in the US attend Duke Summer Session in-person?

If you are currently attending a U.S. institution, it is likely you will be able to participate in Duke Summer Session using your current student visa. However, you will be required to complete the Duke Visa Services web form and provide copies of your official documents. Please contact with questions.

Will my Duke course transfer to my home institution?

Transfer credit is determined by the receiving institution. Please familiarize yourself with the transfer credit policies at your home university.

What is the tuition rate and required fees for summer 2021?

$2,500 for a non-lab course and $3,200 for an extended recitation/lab course.

What are the housing and dining costs for summer 2021?

All housing will be single room so there will only be one rate:  $50.45/day.  For summer 2021, every person with a room on campus must have a meal plan. The Housing and Dining websites have not been updated yet with Summer 2021 information, so please keep checking in March for information.

When will tuition and fees hit student accounts?  What is the payment deadline?

Term 1- Bill date: April 15        Due date: May 12

Visiting students with outstanding tuition and fee balances on the last day of drop/add will be dropped from their course(s) by the Summer Session office.

How do I select my courses?

Explore the course schedule. Carefully review course details and make sure the mode of delivery is appropriate for your summer plans. If you plan to be entirely remote, please make sure there are no required in-person components to your selected course. If a course requires a prerequisite, it will be mentioned in the official course description. That pre-requisite should be on the transcript you submit for admission. Is there a chance that courses could be canceled due to low enrollment?

If we do not have sufficient enrollment, we may make the decision to cancel the course.  Decisions regarding cancellation of Term 1 courses will be made no later than April 30. Decisions regarding cancellation of Term 2 courses will be made no later than June 14.

What will in-person classes be like this summer?

All COVID-19 and public health protocols will remain in place over the summer.  Students will be expected to wear face coverings and practice social distancing during class and approved on-campus co-curricular activities.  Enrollment will be limited in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

What will it be like on the Duke campus this summer?

All COVID-19 and public health protocols will be in place over the summer, including the requirement that all students, faculty, and staff wear face coverings, and adhere to social distancing and hygiene guidelines.  Symptom monitoring via the SymMon app will be in place, as will gateway, surveillance testing, quarantine, and isolation protocols.  All informal and social gatherings must comply with University and North Carolina state COVID-19 guidelines.

Will there be COVID-19 testing this summer?

Yes.  All students are likely to be baseline tested before moving into Summer Session housing and participation in weekly surveillance testing will be required for all students living on campus.  Students can expect to be called for surveillance testing at least once per week, and possibly more frequently.

Can I live on campus if I am taking only virtual classes at Duke this summer?

Yes.  You may live on campus as long as you are enrolled in credit bearing coursework. Visiting international students must be enrolled in two courses and at least one of them must have an in-person component.

Can I take classes at the Duke Marine Lab?

Maybe.  The Marine Lab has their own visiting student application.

What is the closest airport to Duke?

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is about 20 minutes from Duke. You may take a taxi or airport shuttle to campus.

What is DukeHub and why do I need access?

DukeHub is the student self-service application providing students with an array of information and direct access to their academic, financial, and personal data. Access to DukeHub is gained by the use of your NetID and password. Using DukeHub, students can view the course schedule, check their financial account and review their grades. Duke degree students use DukeHub to register for classes; however visiting students must do that through the Summer Session office.

You will have access to DukeHub after you have received an email containing your Net ID and password information from Duke’s Office of Information Technology (OIT). This should happen within a few days after your Duke student record has been created and you have been registered for your summer course(s). The log-in information for DukeHub is the same as the log-in for your Duke email.

What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

In order to access DukeHub and your Duke email, you will be required to set-up a security feature called Multi-Factor Authentication. Go to to enroll in multi-factor authentication. You will be prompted to enter your user name/NetID and password.  If you cannot access this site, call OIT at 919-684-2200 for assistance with your NetID and password.

 After you login successfully, you will see links on the right-hand side of the page that allow you to add devices.  For example, if you choose to Add a Smart Phone or Tablet, you will then be taken to a screen that prompts you to answer these questions:

  • What type of device do you want to register?
  • What operating system does this device have?
  • 10-digit phone number (Note: International numbers should be entered as + followed by the country code and the rest of the phone number)
  • Optional device nickname

After you answer these questions, you will be directed to a page that tells you how to install Duo Mobile. Follow the directions to finish setting up your device and if you have questions, try reading additional documentation at
